Many people don’t know that making smaller goals makes the big dreams possible. But, according to a Harvard Business study, less than 20% of people are even thinking about goal setting and success. Only a few people are thinking of setting smart goals (smart, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely).

Having dreams is just as important as having goals because it allows you to always work towards something, instead of being complacent. Jessica Mendoza, a two-time softball Olympic medalist and the first woman to broadcast MLB World Series games, knows what it takes to be successful and shares how dreams have played a role in that.

While most people don’t commit to making goals in order to achieve their long-term dreams, those that do have proven to be incredibly successful. Patty Wagstaff, the first woman to win the US National Aerobatic Championships, shares the importance of goal setting.

Jessica Mendoza quote“Goal setting is very important because it gives a person a sense of mission.  When we have a sense of mission, we can accomplish almost anything.”

A current collegiate athlete who is living proof that goals and dreams pay off is Nicole May. Nicole is a 3x national champion pitcher for the Oklahoma Sooners and she still has another year of college softball left! She is a prime example not only that hard work pays off, but that not giving up on your lofty dreams is worthwhile.

Growth of Women in College Sports

The journey hasn’t been an easy one, but since the passing of Title IX, the opportunities for women at the collegiate level has soared. Before Title IX, women only made up 15% of NCAA athletes. Today, they make up 44%. The numbers aren’t only staggering for the growth at the collegiate level, but also the impact sports has on girls and women. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls and women who play sports have more self esteem, higher confidence, and a more positive body image compared to those who don’t play sports.

One of the beneficiaries of this is Chloe Gaither. After starting rowing in high school, Chloe had a dream to make it onto the UNC rowing team. But she still had a way to go to make that happen, since she still needed to get faster. Her journey was anything but easy, but the road she took to get to where she is today was well worth it.

Set SMART goals to help you get one step closer every day to your lofty dreams.
